MCM’s lightweight specialist soil blends and lightweight aggregates are supplied in volume in multi-lift bags or loose – perfect where access and load weight is critical, or where craning at height is imperative.
Delivering nationwide, sourcing locally to site, Surrey-based MCM (Matthias Construction Materials) have been leaders in the supply of soils, aggregates and services to industry for almost 30 years.
The MCM approach is to simplify supply chains, sourcing and managing construction materials sustainably and locally: British Standard certified topsoil, subsoil and specialist soil blends; Primary, recycled, hybrid and decorative aggregates; Rapid soil testing and waste management services on and off site, recovering construction waste safely and recycling where possible.
From commercial landscape, civil and construction projects to roof gardens, parks and sports pitches, the MCM team supply material to suit site, project, access and client requirements – loose by articulated vehicles, lorry or tipper or in multi-trip grab bags.
MCM collaborate with a far-reaching nationwide network of partners in haulage; quarries; testing and certification; bagging; and waste recovery and recycling facilities.

MCM Bagging
Providing multi-trip bulk bags for aggregates and topsoil allows for your materials to be bagged and delivered to site, ready for use. MCM bag and deliver materials into roof gardens, private gardens and podium landscapes where access and weight restrictions may be limited.
These bags are certified for multi-lift use and can be emptied and refilled several times, for economical and environmental benefits.
MCM Soil Certification
MCM supplies fully certified British Standard topsoils and subsoils, with testing and certification available upon request, provided by independent soil scientists. MCM works closely with specifiers, landscape architects, and contractors in supplying multi-purpose and specialist soils for the establishment of successful soft landscaping schemes, sourcing and delivering locally direct to sites across the UK.

Meeting your individual site specification and with blend and weight as the most important factors, MCM work with contractors and construction companies to supply the right lightweight soil for your application, purpose and site constraints – delivered in vehicles or bags to accommodate any site restrictions or access limitations.
MCM Lightweight Topsoil
A soil and sand substrate with lower bulk density than standard topsoil, ideal for use as an intensive lightweight substrate in a roof garden or podium landscape environment.
MCM Lightweight Topsoil is a strongly alkaline, non-saline, non-calcareous sand with frequent leca particles. Its light aeration aids drainage and helps avoid compaction.
Supplied in 1m3 and 0.6m3 bags, MCM Lightweight Topsoil can be blended to specification on request.

MCM Lightweight Subsoil
A specialist blend of sand and lightweight aggregate for green roofs, roof gardens and podium landscapes. Its lower structural impact allows for deeper planting, supporting healthy tree and plant establishment. The lighter subsoil contains engineered aggregates to prevent waterlogging and allow excess water to freely drain.
Whilst free draining, the lightweight composition is blended to retain enough moisture and nutrients for plant health and growth. Its porosity promotes strong root development, allowing oxygen to reach and circulate.
Supplied in 1m3 and 0.6m3 bags, MCM Lightweight Subsoil can be blended to specification on request.

MCM Extensive Green Roof Substrate
A blend of 10mm graded PAS 100 Compost blended with 8-14mm expanded clay lightweight aggregate and mulched wood fines. A substrate with a thickness of between 5-14cm, this blend is suitable for low maintenance extensive green roof applications, and sedum planting due to its relatively low organic content, high porosity, and good particle distribution.
MCM Lightweight Aggregate
Up to 50% lighter than conventional building aggregates, the lightweight aggregate stocked and supplied by MCM offers a natural alternative material for construction and civil engineering projects.
In-house stocks of Lytag and other supply options available.
Lytag is a sustainable lightweight civil engineering bulk fill for use in highway structures, backfill, and raising surface levels. It is made from natural materials that would otherwise become landfills.
It is used in structural lightweight concrete, bridges, screed, precast concrete, geofill, drainage, green roofs, SuDS, and pipe bedding. In accordance with BREEAM Technical Guide SD 5073 sub-clause Wst 02, Lytag may be counted towards the recycled aggregate content of a project.
Bulk density varies slightly between the different grades but averages at 0.75 (Mg/m3)
