Harrowden Turf
Harrowden began as four separate turf businesses serving distinct parts of the country. Now we’re a national horticultural grower specialising in turf, wild flower turf, sedum and topsoil.
About
Harrowden has farms on both sides of the country, unrivalled regional knowledge and sixty years’ experience. So, we are well placed to service customers across the UK.
We are also a national distributor for all things horticultural – plants, seeds, tools, bulbs and everything you need to plant, prune, feed, spray and spread. Our culture of innovation means continual improvement, depot development and an ever-expanding product portfolio.
We have established a platform for innovation with the scope and resource to invest in R&D to ensure we remain at the forefront of industry developments. Having adopted the latest turf harvesting technology we have continued to innovate; developing cutting-edge turf, wildflower turf and seed varieties to address the changing climate conditions, the move to greener alternatives and the constant pace of consumer demand.
Harrowden has also taken complete control of its seed production, drawing on scientific principles to meet the requirements of each species throughout its lifecycle. So, we are growing our own plants, processing our own seeds and bringing our own seeds to market. Not only will we be using our own seed in our Meadowmat wild flower turf, but we are also making it available to our various markets as fully traceable wild flower seed mixes.

Turf Products

Our products are grown on some of the finest soil in the country. Rich and fertile, it encourages a vigorous root system that allows our turf to establish quickly into any type of soil.
We draw on sixty years of accumulated knowledge, utilise pioneering techniques and state-of-the-art machinery to ensure the turf you receive is the best it can be. Our turf is grown responsibly; we have adopted lower levels of chemical and fertiliser use, and it is plastic-free.
We offer four types of turf. Our Premium lawn turf, our shade-specific turf – Shadesman+ and Species Rich – perfect for creating for an informal lawn that is beautiful and pollinator-friendly.
Meadowmat Wildflower Mat Products
Our countryside has suffered a dramatic reduction in wild flowers which has had a knock-on effect for insects, birds and pollinators. Meadowmat – in seven different varieties is our way to try to redress the balance.
It can take years to establish a wildflower meadow and there are precious few left. Whilst growing wildflowers sounds easy the conditions they prefer are fast disappearing but Meadowmat is a fast and simple solution to creating a wildflower bed or better still a meadow. Meadowmat was specifically designed and developed to create a fast solution to wildflower adoption. Quicker than seed and less work than plug plants Meadowmat is really “wildflowers on a roll”. You can lay it just like turf and whilst most varieties need low fertility soil it can create an alternative lawn or a wildflower bed almost instantly. Add in all the benefits for pollinators and you have a great product to help achieve BNG targets or to just support greater biodiversity in a garden.
Each variety of Meadowmat wildflower turf is a colourful mix of flowering plants and grasses all growing strongly on our proven matting system. You can treat Meadowmat like ordinary turf. It is grown grown naturally outside by our small team in Norfolk.
Sedum Green Roof Products
At Harrowden, we began growing sedum blankets over 25 years ago. Since then, we have continued to develop new products including HS150, our Extensive Sedum Green Roof Blanket.
Sedum matting was developed in the 1960s for use on commercial roofs. It is now more popular than ever. Green roofs created with Enviromat® reap the ultimate benefits of renewability, cost and energy efficiency.
Given the right growing conditions, sedums are incredibly self-sufficient. They are frost hardy, drought-tolerant and ask for a feed just once or twice a year. There’s no mowing to be done, no deadheading and, as long as you follow our recommendations for their installation and care, they won’t need much weeding either. This is what makes Enviromat® such a versatile product that is happy both on the ground in little or no soil and also on buildings and sheds.
Enviromat® sedum matting is a layer of growing medium embedded onto a mat for easy handling. The species have been specially selected for their ability to thrive in the hostile environment on top of a roof. Sedum flowers appear in summer and are nectar rich. They are particularly attractive to butterflies, but all pollinating insects will benefit.
Harrowden Topsoil
Our topsoil is of the highest quality, carefully produced, free draining and fertile. As leading UK turf suppliers, we know that topsoil is essential to a healthy lawn. Consequently, ours is classed as grade 1. Only 2.5% of UK soils can claim that. Our bulk bags are screened to 20mm.
